Please could a sysop or admin or someone update the following pages?

on the German Wikipedia as well as the English. We've received complaints about their out-of-datedness on the German mailing list.
Would it be feasible to set up a cron job that updates them automatically during off-peak hours (say once every 24 hours)? (Sorry for asking this again, but I didn't receive a reply to the previous time I asked :-p)
Greetings, Timwi

I second the idea to set up a cron job updateing the special pages which are quite crucient to use the Wikipedia. At least the Special:ShortPages and Special:WantedPages should be updated every 24 hours by a cron job on *all* Wikipedias. Regards

Actually, as far as I know it only needs to be done on en: and de:, because only on those languages the functions have been switched off.

I'm really not wanting to come off as impatient, but why is nobody doing this? Is it a lot of work? Do you need someone to write an automated script? Please speak up and I'll do it! Or is there any other technical reason/difficulty/obstacle that I'm not seeing?
Thanks, Timwi

Because that's the wrong way to go about it. The special pages should be rewritten to be faster so they can run live. If that's not feasible, then they should be rewritten to work off a summary table (so people can scroll to the next 50!) and which could be further improved to be updated as relevant changes occur rather than rescanning the entire set of articles at fixed intervals.
Apparently no one is interested in these pages enough to fix them. If you are, then great! Do it.

Nevertheless they are not working as announced: Try between 02:00 and 14:00 UTC (Current Server Time 04:51:25 UTC).
Because Brion is away, someone please can take a look and at least fix this?
Have Erik and Magnus now the rights, to take a look after?

Magnus (Manske) fixed it. Thanks.

I tried but I just managed to kill the wiki for about 5 minutes, with nothing to show for it. I'm not game to give it another go when I can't kill my query if I need to. But like I've said at the village pump, I don't know why you're so anxious to have them updated, since they're useless anyway. What use is Special:Lonelypages, for example, if it only goes up to C?

Oh, oops ;-) But thanks for the explanation :-)
However, wouldn't it still be feasible to at least update it once during an off-peak hour? Just so people can use it now (it's *really* useless as out of date as it is now) until it has been performance-optimised.

Lonelypages and Shortpages are not very useful, that's true; I only included them for completeness. I'm particularly fond of the other two; Longpages to see where I can help split up things when I'm looking for an easy task, and Wantedpages to see where I can help contribute a new article when I'm looking for something a little more challenging.
I guess I'll convert this into another programming task, then :-)
Thanks again, Timwi

I am on on off-peak hours, so I might try to give it a shot, however I do not know how to edit these pages. Or do I have to have system developer access to do so?

There are no quiet hours. If there were I'd have access to them since I live in Australia. Wikipedia's quietest time is about 7pm here, but it's only about 1/3 quieter than the busiest time.

I disagree about that. Maybe Lonelypages are useless, but Shortpages are very useful if you are a sysop who is doing some clean-up. There are several articles which are quite short and consist only of one sentence which should be extended. To search these the Shortpages page is IMHO useful! Regards

Lonelypages are very useful - article that's unreachable is almost an article that doesn't exist.
