Jack Phoenix and I were considering doing a tech talk about how to make a MediaWiki skin. Would there be any interest in this? What would you folks want to see from such a talk?
-I
I would like to see a beautiful skin that looks like it was made in 2015!

I'd be interested in this. Again, partly from the perspective of "I like to understand my enemies so I can better destroy them" ;) but I would really like to understand better the relationship between skin and content in MW. --scott

For a little more detail, see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T106099#1684735 -- I'm interested in exploring what it would mean to implement a skin in client-side JavaScript, but I need to understand better how skins works first. --scott

I'd love to get an overview on creating a new skin. I would be especially interested in the "tales from the real world" aspects of working with RL, what is and isn't possible without implementing hooks, and lessons learned from past skins the two of you have worked on.

I'd be interested in the process people go through purely from a how can I make this simpler perspective. Alternatively you might want to consider doing a skin hack day/afternoon where people build skins and learn for themselves the horror of that process :)

I would be interested as well! I tried making a custom theme based off vector a few years ago but it seemed like quite a bit of effort to build something comprehensive that anyone would actually want to replace the default with. I'd love a guided tour!

I'd be interested as well. My employer is going to be rolling out a new site design soon, and it'd be great to have our Wikis match everything else with regard to look and feel.

How would a hack day/afternoon work? Is that an office thing? If so, would that be something you could run based off... uh, more information?

It could be a 4 hour afternoon session around the dev summit for instance and could be advertised so anyone can join. Essentially it would be a hackathon focused on skins. If you were really ambitious you'd add prizes for best judged skin etc :) On 30 Sep 2015 12:49 pm, "Isarra Yos" zhorishna@gmail.com wrote:

Oh, aye. Might also make sense to have this after the talk, which discusses theory, so then the hack whatever can be where the theory all falls apart.
Wait...

I would like to see a wiki page or to watch a video that I could use as a guide to make a new skin - a task that I am postponing since long as "too complex for now".
