look into bug trackers like Bugzilla: there are things like priority,
release deadlines, blocking, assignment, etc. that it handles natively
but no wiki software would normally do.
This is true, but I think there are advantages to use a wiki in
conjunction with bugzilla to get the best of both worlds. We've been
using mediawiki internally to draft specs, organize workplans and keep
track of worklogs for about 2 years now and it's pretty great. All the
advantages of a wiki come into play, there's no need for sending back
and forth Word docs when everyone can participate in one central
place.
I'm sure with a little bit of elbow grease, the proper extensions
could be developed to provide a free (if scaled down) version of
basecamp, which would be great. The Tasks extension is a good start,
but is pretty limited in what it can do.
