Sorry if that message has been already sent, but I can't see it in the gmane interface.
Hello
I apologise if this question has already has been asked or is elementary, but is there any possibility that the discussion, the talks about a specific topic could be mirrored in a mailing list or newsgroup? For example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sumer
It seems that I can contribute to that discussion, after having logged in, but I would prefer a more familiar interface such as the emacs editor. If such discussions were mirrored in a mailing list, I could use that editor for this purpose.
Now I see for example the daily-article mailing list which is mirrored in gmane as gmane.org:gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia but there seems no response posted.

Talk pages are considered as one block of text and nothing in the database store them as separate messages. Any new modification can add several replies and even modify an existing message. Looks a bit hard to implement that actually (need parsing, ability to changes previous messages in nntp / cancel messages etc..).

In preferences: "Editing" > check "Use external editor by default" , will send you the file for editing in whatever editor. Not sure how it works exactly though ;)

The daily-article group in gmane is just a moderated mailing list where emails are sent by one person. So it is in no way an automatic feature of MediaWiki :p

Basically, you associate a program (currently a perl script) with the application/x-external-editor MIME type.

But you would agree that this form of communication (via email or pseudo email) would greatly improve the convenience? Also that seems to be a different topic, but right now there exit software for so called virtual campus (in order to present students a unified support for an academic course; WEBCT and its free counterparts like moodle) In this environment it is possible to have a sort of local mailing list for discussions between lecturer and students. May such an approach could be used for wikipedia?

Ok that is of course another solution. I will try out. Thanks

Basically, yes.
I thought like any free/open project wikipedia is under some sort of version control, because otherwise things could be easily lost.
The changes are preserved as revisions, so one could see that you edited another message. However, when reading only the latest revision, things can be confusing. I think that it is frowned upon editing other people's messages (or personal pages), but this is not strictly enforced.
Best wishes,
