Right you are, Jim; and you’ll notice the raw WikiTeX source provides PNG’s. I tweaked the local installation at Wikisophia since transparent PNG’s aren’t supported by IE.
But how I’ve longed for PNG! We must, alas, choose between transparent GIF’s and PNG’s opaque until LongHorn (lol!).
Vive l’opacité?

Interesting, Brion; I'm rewriting WikiTeX as a PHP extension, interfacing natively with ImageMagick's API. Yet under IE, I've had limited success with DVI-derived PNG's.
Of course, everything works beautifully in Firefox and company; and an alternative library may do the trick.

I even have a small js solution to make the stuff render at the right size and on the baseline in a web browser, but this is not released (yet). Visual output of my latest try can be found at http://www.mai.liu.se/~jalar/dvipng/test2.html You can change fontsize as you want. AFAIK there is no js event for text zoom, so you'll have to click in the page after a text zoom.

In my experiance this is the case, so on IE PNG is limited to only displaying what a GIF could, but at least the files are smaller and more free.
