Enrico is free to "start a forkoff" without
the approval of the existing
development team and without CVS access, after all MediaWiki is licensed
under GPL. I'll do my best to make the main line of MediaWiki
development outcompete it in terms of features, stability and
performance.
Thats the right way.
Choosing which branch to use for Wikipedia could then
be
left up to the users and the Board of Trustees.
This is the correct way for
wikipedia. Other mediawiki user will also
decide on their own upon their needs.
I dont think that my fork will soon be suitable for wikipedia, since
I'm doing some quite huge changes, most of them are only interesting
for use in companies, but meaningless for the wikipedia community
(i.e. access control, multiple sections, ...).
I'd also see phase4 as an development project for new, quite
experimental features, which of course later may also be implemented
in current mediawiki, i.e. XML export/import interface, etc.
