Instant notifications. All messages no matter who they're from, who they're for (mailing list or personal message to you), or what their topic is are available from one place and you can organize them if you wish. Any of many different types of clients can be used to access them. And everyone gets to pick whichever threading model they want.
It's no wonder people get drawn back to using email when there isn't something contextual to the subject anchoring it to a wiki, no matter what method of discussions are used on-wiki.
