Ah, right. That obviously be too much hassle. Their website is not that clear, but I think it's 100$ (per year?) for wildcard certificates. ("StartSSLâ„¢ identity and organization validation are available for only US $ 49.90 each, where organization validation implies prior identity validation. Once validated, certificates are freely available through the advanced StartSSLâ„¢ Control Panel and unlimited for 350 days of the validated identity/organization.")

I use StartSSL myself, but they don't offer wildcard certificates for free. Using non-wildcard certs would require us to request (and regularly renew) around 1,000 certs, as well as requiring a new cert for each new language project which opens.
StartSSL wildcard certs might be cheaper than another provider (it's not very clear from their website), but either way there's a cost involved.
