throwaway?), but yet is a tradeoff.
I realise it'd be a pile of extra work, and I'm not sure how to
present it clearly - but what about a choice between solving the
captcha or supplying a working email address?

That sounds pretty reasonable. I think it would be pretty user friendly and
possibly allow us to collect data on which of the two is more used by spam
bots.
