(Jimmy Wales <jwales(a)bomis.com>)m>):
Just in case some other wikitech members don't know anything about
sendmail, I'll explain Brion's *shudder*. The sendmail.cf file is in
more or less the original format that sendmail.cf files have been in
for years: virtually indistinguishable in places from modem noise.
When the fine folks at sendmail realized that the complexity of the
config file had grown so high that virtually no one understood how to
use it, they came up with a brilliant (?) idea.
Now what you're supposed to do is write *another* config file, in M4
format (a format no one else uses for anything) and compile that
(using a program no one else uses for anything) to create a
sendmail.cf.
It's all frightening and insane.
...and the reason Piclab uses qmail. Of course, sendmail does have
the advantage that it's the /standard/ brain-damaged mess. "m4"
actually isn't that uncommon and isn't bad.
