It is easy for a group to make a snap decision, or to end up in an echo chamber, where decisions seem "obvious" to everyone who is participating. Yes, sometimes there are easy or obvious decisions. But with the stakes so high on this one, it seems prudent to think it through, enumerate the arguments, and invite discussion.
If the decision is really so clearcut, the analysis and discussion should be quick and painless. Hopefully it can also be civil and respectful, especially toward those arguing the minority view (whether because they believe it, or because they are just trying to help reach the best possible outcome).
For what it's worth, I have added this topic to the TechCom internal meeting agenda for this week. They can decide whether or not to schedule an IRC meeting, or to take other steps.
