Maybe you're right.
But from other similar projects (i.e. some weeks ago I've nearly completely rewritten phpPgAdmin to be completely based on patTemplate - something which will someday also happen w/ mediawiki ...), I've seen that it doesnt make much sense to try to do this in the main branch (and is often not wanted, since the maintainers do not see any need for such huge changes).
Of course it would be great, if we could backport some interesting improvements, but at the moment I really dont want to be limited by compatibility requirements. Once I've implemented an proper XML interface, also the database layout may undergo some huge changes.
IMHO its better to cleanly separate the new work from the current branch.
