Right you are, Jim; and you’ll notice the raw WikiTeXsource provides PNG’s. I tweaked the local installation at Wikisophia since transparent PNG’s aren’t supported by IE.
IE supports transparent PNGs just fine so long as they're binary transparency rather than alpha.
In my experiance this is the case, so on IE PNG is limited to only displaying what a GIF could, but at least the files are smaller and more free.
