I am one of those people. I happily use shared hosting for MediaWiki because (1) it is very cheap and (2) I don't have to maintain the OS.

I used shared hosting initially. Another thing it was very good for was processing power - it could actually handle intensive tasks like instantcommons or semantic queries fairly well. When I switched to dedicated initially (this was a very crappy one a few years back) I couldn't use instantcommons at all because it just didn't have the needed power.
