Well, as over time the various wikis get larger and bring in bigger audiences, their database needs grow. The English wiki, big and slow, is about the size of the others combined; but the others have been running with all kinds of features still in place that have been disabled on the English wiki because they slow things down too much.
Well, I guess it's time to give the hardware a little kick. It's served wikipedia well, but the load is really pushing it lately. What happened with the stuff Jimbo was talking about a week or 2 back or so? If not, is it possible to start a donation drive? or supplement Jimbo's (potential) donation with outside donations?
as a side note, i remember you talking about implementing memcached about 2 weeks back. How did the test go? anything that looked promising?
