For small and simple wikis shared hosting is still the best option: *it's cheap *it's easy to mantain *it can become pretty fast IMHO shared hosting support shouldn't be dropped.

I used shared hosting initially. Another thing it was very good for was processing power - it could actually handle intensive tasks like instantcommons or semantic queries fairly well. When I switched to dedicated initially (this was a very crappy one a few years back) I couldn't use instantcommons at all because it just didn't have the needed power.
