Though, as I've noted, merely turning off CSS interpretation seems to
work quite nicely... Are there any handheld browsers that a) will
interpret CSS in the first place and b) will *not* let you turn that
off?

If you want this stuff to work right on your device, donate one and any
necessary subscriptions to the Foundation and we'll test and tweak until
we figure it out.
Otherwise we've got no way to test, unless you're willing to work
closely with a developer to tweak and test (and report problems later).
