Copy the text from the extension (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Algorithm/RandomSelection) into a file called RandomSelection.php in docroot/extensions. (Depending on your wiki version, you might need the older version of the extension -- I did.) Then add the line
require_once( "extensions/RandomSelection.php" );
to your LocalSettings.php and everything should just work. Use the same markup as the examples given earlier in this thread to use the random selection function.
I've just used this to enable random quotes to be shown at the top of my Special:Recentchanges, which was a silly cosmetic feature I missed from MoinMoin. Yay.
