302 doesn't achieve anything with respect to search engines, or at least Google: http://www.google.com/intl/en/webmasters/3.html
It /shouldn't/ work for the others either. If it does, it's because those search engines are broken. 302 is a temporary redirect.
301 was part of HTTP/1.0: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc1945/rfc1945
