There are a lot of people, like myself, who have started using different
e-mails for every site they sign up to. For example,
wikipedia_aug07(a)example.com would be the e-mail address I would use if I
joined WP today. This allows easy inbox filtering, and is an good way to
see which sites are disreputable/insecure when the spam starts coming in.
When you own your own domain name (rather than using gmail or whatever) this
requires no extra work (you can just make up the bit before the @ sign
however you like), so a lot of people use this or a similar method to avoid
being spammed to death.
