The import process converts the XML to whatever format your version needs on the back end. This (among other reasons) is why we only provide the XML dump for this data now.
Another small problem. If you go to the following url: http://download.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/
the full wikipedia page dump(pages_full.xml.bz2) seems to have a size of 14.1 GB but when I download it its size is only 2GB. Any clue what went wrong?
Sounds like the software you used to download only supports files as large as two gigs. In Linux I use wget, if you run windows I'm not sure what to suggest.
