Don't we add classes like ns-2 already? In that case, wouldn't ns--1 suffice?

Yes, ns--1 would still suffice, but, I figured ns-special would look cleaner in CSS code, and, is easier to remember. ns--1 also looks (and is very easy to mistype as) ns-1 which is completely different.
