edit icon which could be used on all wikis. It would be very useful to
have more Wikipedians involved in this process.

Actually I prefer the icons, because they provide a consistency which you
simply cannot get with text. Whilst "edit" is blessedly succinct in English,
I'll bet that in other languages the equivalent is much more verbose: this
could be used in the alt-text just like at present.
