Breaking change: Removal of rc_type and rc_new fields from recentchanges table
by Amir Sarabadani 18 Aug '25

18 Aug '25

Hello, As part of improving performance and stability of the recentchanges table, we are addressing some tech debt. rc_new field was deprecated 13 years ago and rc_type similarly was deprecated 11 years ago. We are moving forward with dropping these columns in favour of rc_source field. If you're querying rc_new or rc_type, please switch to using rc_source instead. They will be removed from wikireplicas in a week. This would allow us to consolidate several different indexes on this table and improve performance of Special:Recentchanges and Watchlist plus simplifying MediaWiki code. To follow the work, you can check https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400696 and related subtickets. Thank you and apologies for the inconvenience Best -- *Amir Sarabadani (he/him)* Staff Database Architect Wikimedia Foundation <https://wikimediafoundation.org/>

mediawiki database upgrade
by Tim Moody 18 Aug '25

18 Aug '25

I have a sqlite mediawiki database, which I think is version 1.36, with around 10K articles. I tried installing 1.44 mediawiki and in startup declaring the sqlite file, and it offers to update, but when I click continue it returns 504 after awhile and htop shows php with 100% CPU that never ends (at least after 12 hours) The datetime of the sqlite file does increment for about 10 - 15 minutes and stop. If I kill it and reboot, there is still no LocalSettings.php, so it wants to start over. Is there a way to confirm from the database that it is version 1.36? Is there a manual upgrade that only does the database and with this relatively large number of articles? php maintenance/run.php update wants a LocalSettings.php file which is a result of the upgrade process. Thanks, Tim

We would like to announce the release of MediaWiki Language Extension Bundle 2025.07. This bundle is compatible with '''MediaWiki 1.44.0'''. It requires '''PHP >= 8.1.0'''. The next MLEB is expected to be released in 6 months after '''MediaWiki 1.45 release'''. If there are important bug fixes, we will do an intermediate release. Please give us your feedback at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:MLEB * Download: https://translatewiki.net/mleb/MediaWikiLanguageExtensionBundle-2025.07.tar… * sha256sum: 4bde98632adeba62710779ec36025abb225939fe0b5052f6e793fcc84e1afb2e * Signature: https://translatewiki.net/mleb/MediaWikiLanguageExtensionBundle-2025.07.tar… Highlights: CleanChanges extension is no longer part of MLEB releases. Tech News 2025, week 32
by Nick Wilson (Quiddity) 04 Aug '25

04 Aug '25

Latest *tech news <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News>* from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2025/32> are available. *Updates for editors* - Editors can now enable the User Info card <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Product_Safety_and_Integr…>. This feature adds an icon next to usernames on history pages and similar user-contribution log pages. When you tap or click on the icon, it displays data related to that user account such as the number of edits, reverted edits, blocks, and more. It's part of a broader project to make it easier for moderators to evaluate account trustworthiness. The feature can be enabled in your global preferences <https://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalPreferences#mw-prefsection-re…>, and later this week it will be available in local preferences. [1] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T386439> - Everybody is invited to share comments on Collaborative Contributions <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/CampaignEvents/Collabora…>, a project recently launched by the Connection team <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Connection_Team>. The project aims to create a new way to display the impact of collaborative editing activities (such as edit-a-thons, backlog drives, and WikiProjects) on the wikis. Post your comments on the project talk page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:CampaignEvents/Collaborative_contribut…>. [2] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T378035> - Administrators can now define the default block duration for temporary accounts. To do that, they need to create a page named MediaWiki:Ipb-default-expiry-temporary-account and use a value defined in MediaWiki:Ipboptions. This allows administrators to easily block temporary accounts for 90 days, which is functionally equivalent to an indefinite block. The advantage of this solution is that it does not clutter Special:BlockList. More documentation <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Manual:Block_and_unblock#…> is available. [3] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T398626> - [image: Recurrent item] View all 27 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/Recently_resol…> . *Updates for technical contributors* - Gadgets can now include .vue files. This makes it easier to develop modern user interfaces using Vue.js <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Vue.js>, in particular using Codex <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Codex>, the official design system of Wikimedia. Codex icons <https://doc.wikimedia.org/codex/latest/icons/overview.html> can be loaded through the gadget definition. The documentation <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Extension:Gadgets#Pages> has examples. For user scripts that use Vue.js, an API module <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:CodexIcons> now exists to load Codex icons. [4] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T340460>[5] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T311099> - Module developers can now use a Lua interface <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:Translate/Message_Bundles/Lua…> to simplify the preparation of Lua modules for translation on Meta-Wiki. This improvement makes it easier for translators to find and edit module strings without dealing with raw Lua code. It helps prevent mistakes that could break the module during translation. Module developers and translators are invited to watch the demo video <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Translatable_modules_video_demo_Jul…>, read more about translatable modules <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Translatable_modules> to understand how it works, refer to Meta-Wiki's Module:User Wikimedia project <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Module:User_Wikimedia_project> for example usage, and share their feedback <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Translatable_modules> on how well it addresses the challenges in their workflow. The interface still has some performance issues, so it should not be used in widely used modules yet. [6] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T359918> - Developers of external tools that connect to Wikimedia pages must set a user-agent that complies with the user-agent policy <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Policy:Wikimedia_F…>. This policy will start to be more strongly enforced in August because of external crawlers that are overusing <https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/04/01/how-crawlers-impact-the-operations-of…> Wikimedia's resources. Tools that are hosted on Wikimedia's Toolforge or Cloud VPS will not be affected by this for now, but should still set a user-agent. More technical details are available <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T400119>, and related questions are welcome in that task. - Parsoid Read Views is going to be rolling out to some smaller Wikipedias over the next few weeks, following the successful transition of Wikivoyages and Wiktionaries to Parsoid Read Views. For more information, see the Parsoid/Parser Unification <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Parsoid/Parser_Unification> project page. [7] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/7694/> - [image: Recurrent item] Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.45/wmf.13> *Meetings and events* - Wikimania 2025 <https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/2025:Wikimania> will run from August 6–9. The program is available <https://wikimedia.eventyay.com/talk/wikimania2025/schedule/> for you to plan which sessions you want to attend. Most sessions will be live-streamed, with exceptions for those that show the "no camera" icon. If you are joining online to watch live-streams and use the interactive features, please register <https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/2025:Registration> for a free virtual ticket.
