CI now runs a phan job for most MediaWiki extensions and skins

Hi all, Across the MediaWiki development community, we've increasingly been using phan <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Continuous_integration/Phan> for static analysis and vulnerability checking. It's become very valuable in spotting issues during development, especially thanks to the security checking plugin maintained and extended by Daimona <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Continuous_integration/Phan/Phan-taint-check…>, but as phan has been run as a separate CI job, getting it configured for your repo was a bit of a chore, even assuming you knew it was available. However, no more! Legoktm proposed <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T283097> that we make the phan CI job pass when unconfigured, and as of a few minutes ago, I've deployed this change to CI to do this for (almost) all MediaWiki skins and extensions. As a quick example, the Cargo extension previously did not have a phan CI job; it now does, as can be seen on this patch <https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/Cargo/+/693398>. When the maintainers of that extension want actually use phan on their extension, configuring it in the normal way <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Continuous_integration/Tutorials/Add_phan_to…> should Just Work™ in a self-service manner, without needing to ask for CI to be configured. If there are any issues, please file a Phabricator task. If you need any help getting phan working for your extension, please drop into Libera IRC; the #wikimedia-releng channel might be a good one. [train] 1.37.0-wmf.6 status update

Hello, The 1.37.0-wmf.6 version of MediaWiki is blocked[0]. I had it deployed to group 1 for a few hours and rolled back after we found some blockers. We can proceed no further until these issues are resolved: * Special:RecentChanges in it.wikiversity dies with an internal error https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T283170 * InvalidArgumentException: Unable to normalize the provided actor name x.y.z.v/16 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T283167 They seem related to refactoring that happened in mediawiki/core. Removal of custom CLI options for the PHPUnit runner

MediaWiki 1.31 will soon be End-of-Life

Hello all, I wanted to send a heads-up to various places that MediaWiki 1.31, the legacy LTS release, will be End-of-Life as of next month, June 2021.[0] There will be a final release to follow-on from the current latest version 1.31.14 coming out in June, but it may have slipped people's mind that this deadline is approaching so swiftly. System administrators still using 1.31 are encouraged to start their migration to the current LTS release, 1.35. MediaWiki 1.35, released in September 2020, will be supported until September 2023. If you don't require LTS support, you will be able to upgrade to 1.36 which will be supported till May 2022 once it is released, before the end of the month. As always, please be mindful of the upgrade instructions, especially including making a back-up of your database, and testing extension compatibility. Thanks! GitLab: Implementation status update and a call for early adopters

tl;dr: We're still moving to GitLab. WMF Release Engineering & SRE are working with contractors on an MVP installation of GitLab CE, which we hope to have running by July, and in use by early-adopter projects soon thereafter. Read on for more details. ---- Hi all, It's been over six months since we wrapped up the GitLab consultation process[0] with a decision to migrate from Gerrit to GitLab's Community Edition. It seemed like a good idea to update the community with our progress since then. We currently have contractors from Speed & Function working on a minimum-viable installation of GitLab CE. We hope to be fairly confident installing this by the end of June (end Q4 of WMF's fiscal year). You can follow this work on the "GitLab (Initialization)" workboard in Phabricator.[1] Additionally, we're hiring for two Service Operations SRE positions to build and support a more robust production installation[3], and planning for new job runner capacity to handle CI on GitLab. Tentatively, we in RelEng hope to begin using GitLab for some of our own projects around July (early Q1 of WMF fiscal year) and begin migrating other projects thereafter. (Keeping in mind, of course, that everything takes longer than you expect.[4]) We've already heard from some people that their project or team is interested in being an early adopter of GitLab. Page security extension disclaimer

Under the tag of WP:BOLD I took the liberty of copying the "Page security extension disclaimer" that is put on extension pages whenever an extension uses a legit hook like "usercan" . While I get why the disclaimer is added, the words used in the disclaimer are certainly up for improvements. It now states, whenever you need security, use another package, not MediaWiki. It also brands an extension using legit hooks to be a hack. So I made a simple template "Page security extension disclaimer 2021" that still shares the sames bottomline message : "MediaWiki is not responsible for exposed content", but using words that are more appropriate. I would like people to review the original disclaimer and the text I have used to come up with a suitable solution.

Learn about recent incidents at Incident status <https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Incident_status> on Wikitech, or Preventive measures <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/view/4758/> in Phabricator. ------- Trends In April, we saw a continuation of the healthy trend that started this January <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/post/view/227/production_excellence…> — a trend where the back of the line is moving forward at least as quickly as the front of the line. We did take a little breather in March <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/post/view/229/production_excellence…> where we almost broke even, but otherwise the trend is going well. Last month we bade farewell to the production errors we found in July 2019. This month we cleared out the column for October 2019. One point of concern is that we did encounter a high number of new production errors — are errors that we failed to catch during development, code review, continuous integration, beta testing, or pre-deployment checks. Where we used to discover about a dozen of those a month, whereas we found 42 during this month. As of writing, 17 of the 42 April-discovered errors have been resolved. The "Old" column (generally tracking pre-2019 tasks) grew for the first time in six months. This increase can largely be attributed to improved telemetry of client-side errors uncovering issues in under-resourced products, such as the old Kaltura video player. Is possible to use Wikimedia's public REST API on third-party wikis?

Hello, I am a maintainer of a third-party wiki and the wiki is run on a machine with restricted resources. Our wiki is running its own Mathoid on the same machine and has a demand for Citoid. Recently, I have known the REST API of Wikimedia is open to the public[1]. I wonder if the public API is available and the usage is encouraged for third-party wikis like instant commons[2]. If so, I would make a plan to replace the Mathoid run on our machine with Wikimedia's one and add support for Citoid. Hello all, The Wikimedia hackathon <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021> is coming up in a few weeks, on May 22-23! We’re very excited to gather online with you all and hack together. On top of the informal hacking, we would like to build a light, community powered program, with sessions and discussions about the technical environment in the Wikimedia movement. We will have two different “tracks”, each of them having its own setup: 1. Hi all, Would you like to get more people taking part in the Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees election? The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees announced the plan for the 2021 Board elections <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard/2021…>. That plan includes outreach and communication support for the Board elections. The Board election facilitators will: - Inform communities of the trustee selection process - Invite communities to engage in voting - Encourage people representing emerging Wikimedia communities to run as candidates Voter turnout in prior elections was about 10% globally. It was better in communities with volunteer election support. Some of those communities reached over 20% voter turnout. We know we can get more voters to help assess and promote the best candidates, but to do that, we need your help. We are looking for volunteers to serve as Election Volunteers. Election Volunteers should have a good understanding of their communities. The facilitation team sees Election Volunteers as doing the following: - Promote the election in their communities’ channels - Organize discussions about the election in their communities - Translate messages for their communities *Who are the Election Volunteers to connect your community with this movement effort? I was looking at Pywikibot's commit stats for something and noticed that as of earlier today, `git shortlog -s` reports that Xqt hit 4,000 commits in the pywikibot/core repository! For comparison, the next human is at 822 commits. In total the repository has a little over 9,800 commits, of which ~40% are from Xqt. Thank you Xqt for all your work maintaining Pywikibot for so many years and for helping power so many bots across Wikimedia. -- Legoktm
