Minor Bingle improvements - users please update your code
by Arthur Richards 22 Feb '14

22 Feb '14

I had some free time today and made some minor improvements to Bingle to take care of two longstanding, really annoying issues: https://github.com/awjrichards/bingle/issues/10 https://github.com/awjrichards/bingle/issues/11 (Same issues also reported via BZ: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57830) The changes should improve the formatting of bug descriptions/comments in Mingle. Bingle users, please consider git pull'ing for the latest :) -- Arthur Richards Software Engineer, Mobile [[User:Awjrichards]] IRC: awjr +1-415-839-6885 x6687

huggle 3 C++ / python developers wanted!
by Petr Bena 21 Feb '14

21 Feb '14

Hi, Do you have an understanding of python or C++? WE NEED YOU! Huggle 3 is an antivandalism tool used on wikipedia and some other wikimedia projects. It's written in C++ with use of Qt framework and it also contains embedded python interpreter so that it can be extended with python extensions (as well as with c/c++ extensions). Currently the dev team consist only of 2 active developers (by active we mean they push at least 1 commit per week) which makes the development extremely slow. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you were interested in joining our small & friendly dev team, join #huggle @freenode.net, send an e-mail to our mailing list: huggle(a)lists.wikimedia.org or just fork https://github.com/huggle/huggle3-qt-lx and start sending patches :-). February '14 appreciation thread
by Tomasz W. Kozlowski 21 Feb '14

Hi! In a shameless copy of Sumana's August 2012 idea, I'd like to send public thanks to some people who have helped me get some things done in the past few weeks/days: * Guillaume Paumier, for his overall amazingness and his help in creating and distributing the weekly Tech News bulletin; * Daniel Zahn (mutante) and Sam Reed (Reedy) for their help in getting my Gerrit patches reviewed & merged (long overdue!); * Ariel Glenn (apergos) for triaging my latest RT ticket and for being so nice and understanding on a Sunday evening ;-) So, if you'd like to thank someone, now is a good time and opportunity to do so! Following Sumana's example, the rules are: "be kind, thank someone, and say why you're thanking them." Tomasz

deploying the most recent MediaWiki code: which branch?
by Sumana Harihareswara 21 Feb '14

21 Feb '14

I got permission from Reuben Smith of wikihow and WMF release manager Greg Grossmeier to re-post this exchange. Sumana Harihareswara Engineering Community Manager Wikimedia Foundation Reuben Smith of wikiHow asked: "We're having a hard time figuring out whether we should be basing our wikiHow code off Mediawiki's external releases (such as the latest 1.22.2), or off the branches that WMF uses for their internal infrastructure (latest looks to be wmf/1.23wmf14). Do you have any thoughts of guidance on that? We're leaning towards moving to using the WMF internal branches, since we use MySQL as well, but I wanted to hear from different people about the drawbacks." Greg Grossmeier responded: "The quick answer is: Feel free to base it off of either. There shouldn't be any WMF-specific things in those wmfXX branches. If there is, it is a commit called something like "Commit of various WMF live hacks". That one commit can be safely reverted. The wmfXX branches are made every week on Thursday morning (Pacific) before we deploy. As we get closer to the next release (1.23) the MediaWiki Release Managers (our outside contractors, Mark and Markus, not myself) will pick a wmfXX to call a Release Candidate. Going with a 1.22.x would give you stability at the loss of getting fixes faster and it means a bigger upgrade task when 1.23 is out. Summary: If you want to keep closer to WMF, pick a wmfXX branch (this assumes you'll follow at some pace behind WMF). If you don't want to be that bleeding edge, stick with 1.22.x. Hope that helps, Greg PS: To learn more about our deploy cycle, see: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Deployments/One_week PPS: To see where we are at any given point, wrt MediaWiki, see: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.23/Roadmap#Schedule_for_the_depl…"

Proof of concept implementation for Structured logging RFC
by Bryan Davis 20 Feb '14

20 Feb '14

Yesterday I opened Gerrit change 112699 [0] with a proof of concept implementation for the Structured logging RFC [1] that leverages PSR-3 and Monolog. I'm sure it's not ready to merge yet but hopefully it will get some attention from interested parties to move this discussion forward. >From the commit message: > This proof of concept implementation of the structured logging RFC > introduces a PSR-3 based logging class. The MWLogger class is actually > a thin wrapper around any PSR-3 LoggerInterface implementation. Named > MWLogger instances can be obtained from the MWLogger::getInstance() > static method. MWLogger expects a class implementing the MWLoggerSpi > interface to act as a factory for new MWLogger instances. A concrete > MWLoggerSpi implementation using the Monolog library is also provided. There are a couple things in this change that I expect deserve discussion. The biggest is the way that I am proposing to use Composer to manage importing Monolog and the Psr\Log libraries into mediawiki-core. This crosses into the territory of the Third-party components RFC [2]. This topic has come up on gerrit already. I gave this response there: > Jeroen wrote: >> Not really nice to just copy the monolog sources into MW... > > I would agree that it's not the cleanest or prettiest way to get significant > third-party code incorporated into MediaWiki, but this is part of the > conversation that I was hoping this patch could move forward. > > Do you have a suggestion for a better way to incorporate external packages > that will allow deployment to WMF cluster and easy packaging for the tarball > releases? RFC review this Friday: HTML templating + Service Oriented Architecture
by Sumana Harihareswara 20 Feb '14

20 Feb '14

This week, we're mostly discussing the HTML templating and SOA RFCs - https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Architecture_Summit_2014/HTML_templating and https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Requests_for_comment/Services_and_narrow_int… have more information. Gabriel Wicke will be asking for some decisions on both. :) https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Architecture_meetings/RFC_review_2014-02-21s… that we'll also talk briefly about guideline documents. You can add one more RFC to the agenda if you need a decision on something. Brion will be there but not Tim. The Zürich Hackathon and you
by Quim Gil 20 Feb '14

20 Feb '14

Hi, the registration to the Zürich Hackathon will open very soon. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Zurich_Hackathon_2014 Wikimedia CH is doing a great work putting in place the foundations of the event. There are two areas where they need help from the tech community: * defining the schedule * processing travel sponsorship requests We should have 3-5 experienced contributors in each of these areas, overlaps allowed. In the first case they would drive the definition of the schedule, with whatever community process they want to put in place. In the second place they would need to go case by case and decide privately as a team whether candidate X gets sponsorship or not. Who wants to get involved in the program? I'm happy to help with the sponsorship requests. Please document in the wiki page. I will be on offline holidays on Feb 8-17, but you can ask any questions about the event to Manuel, CCed. Thank you! -- Quim Gil Technical Contributor Coordinator @ Wikimedia Foundation http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Qgil

Thoughts on hiding text from the internal search
by Chad 20 Feb '14

20 Feb '14

Hi, I'm curious how people would go about hiding text from the internal MediaWiki search engine (not external robots). Right now I'm thinking of doing a rather naïve .nosearch class that would be stripped before indexing. I can see potentials for abuse though. Does anyone have any bright ideas? -Chad
