Happy new year, everyone!
Many thanks to all of you who contributed to our multimedia programs last year! Now that we have a new multimedia team at WMF, we look forward to making some good progress together this year.
To kick off the new year, here is a proposed multimedia vision for 2016, which was prepared by our multimedia and design teams, with guidance from community members:
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/01/09/multimedia-vision-2016/
This possible scenario is intended for discussion purposes, to help us visualize how we could improve our user experience over the next three years. We hope that it will spark useful community feedback on some of the goals we are considering.
After you’ve viewed the video, we would be grateful if you could let us know what you think in this discussion:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Multimedia_Features/Vision_…
We are looking for feedback from all users who benefit from Commons, even if their work takes place on other sites. This vision explores ways to integrate Wikimedia Commons more closely with Wikipedia and other MediaWiki projects, to help users contribute more easily to our free media repository -- wherever they are.
In coming weeks, we will start more focused discussions on some key features outlined in this presentation. If you would like to join those conversations and keep up with our work, we invite you to subscribe to our multimedia mailing list:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/multimedia
We look forward to more great collaborations in the new year!
All the best,
Fabrice
on behalf of the Multimedia team

Welcome, Shahyar!!! It's really fun that recent arrivals include folks
from two places where I really feel I belong--Montreal and Mexico. Now,
if only they were a 30-minute subway ride away from each other... :)
P.S. Montreal is better than Toronto.
P.P.S. Carnitas are better than poutine.

Users are very confused and worried any time a new version of wiki software
is launched and tested, and some major or minor bug comes invariably out.
A clear message using central sitenotice, with links to doc pages listing
the changes at different levels of detail and to their talk pages to
discuss them and to alert for bugs, is mandatory IMHO. Tech news are
largely insufficient; evidence of work in progress should be clearly
visible into all pages of interested projects. It's a basic matter of
Wikilove.

Heya,
Today, January 8th until 11:59 PM PST, you can vote in the straw poll for
the Architecture Summit. Please cast your votes here:

Tomorrow I will start creating the program for the Summit and cannot
promise to include your votes anymore.
Thanks to all the folks who have voted so far.

Hi everyone,
Please join me in welcoming David Chan as software engineer in the Language
Engineering team. Most you already know David from his awesome work on the
Visual Editor (VE) team integrating language support for the VE. We enjoyed
working with David so much that he will be now working full time at WMF
helping make the Visual Editor multilingual as well as developing
internationalization (i18n) and localization (L10n) tools to support 287
languages on Wikimedia sites.
David is a self-proclaimed i18n nerd with an interest in languages, both
major and lesser-resourced. He has been working in language technology
development for more than a decade having developed a English Welsh / Welsh
English content translation web service for Bangor University as well as
Android applications such as Ap Geiriaduron. He's been an open-source
enthusiast and contributor since 1997 and has campaigned for patent reform
in the UK. He's excited to be joining WMF and contributing to all things
language.
David can be reached on email at dchan at wikimedia.org and on our irc
channels including #mediawiki, #wikimedia-dev and #mediawiki-i18n.
Welcome David! I am excited to have you on the language engineering team!
Best,

Hello,
After a few months of waiting, the Jenkins/Gerrit gateway has been
successfully upgraded during European morning.
The change is transparent to user, a big change is that jobs are now
being triggered and reported faster by Jenkins. There should not be
anymore long waiting time with people wondering whether Jenkins is broken.
I will carefully monitor it tonight during peak hours (after 8pm UTC).
If you see anything screwed or some long waiting time, please let me know.
cheers,

Heya,
If you haven't exercised your right to cast a vote in the Straw Poll for
the Architecture Summit then this would be a real good time to do so.
I would like to close the poll by January 8th so we can start making the
final program.
You can find the straw poll here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Architecture_Summit_2014/Straw_poll
Thanks for your help and please help me in driving the turnout - the more
votes the better!

I have seen only one place with poutine in the entire city, and it is
conveniently two and a half blocks from the office.
