I said last week that I would be releasing 1.20 today. Due to some
hiccups, I won't be able to do that. I'll work on the release tonight
and prep it for tomorrow.
Thank you for your patience,
Mark.

Hi,
Change 31065 drops the possessive prefix from toolbar labels, per the outcome of the discussion on bug 41672. Unless there are strong objections, I am going to merge it on Monday.
Isarra and MZMcBride deserve the credit for noticing this and pointing it out; flaws in the patch or this announcement (if any) are my own.

I've signed us up to participate in the Outreach Program for Women
(administered by the GNOME Foundation), which provides paid internships
to women to work on our open source projects, January through March
2013. Wikimedia Foundation is willing to pay the internship stipend for
three to four participants. More details:
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeWomen/FOSSOutreachProgram
Some reasons I think this is a good idea:
* We'll make strong connections with a few talented people who will
stick around
** We have enough mentors to do this well
* We can encourage people to work on testing, design, documentation,
marketing, and other areas as well as code
* It's a proven method for increasing the number and proportion of women
in an open source community
** GNOME started this effort a few years ago and attendance at their
yearly technical conference has improved from 4% women to 17% women
* Interns don't need to be students, so we're more accepting of age
diversity
* Instead of making newbies write fixed proposals with schedules,
internships can follow broader charters and flex to accommodate
students' interests and abilities
This week I'm taking care of the paperwork, lining up mentors (you can
sign up at [[Outreach Program for Women]]), and adding tiny tasks to
that page (in order to apply, participants have to make a small
contribution, like fixing or reproducing a bug). Applications will open
this month.
I'll be sending out more information about this as soon as I create it. :-)

Last year we decided not to participate in Google Code-In
https://www.google-melange.com/gci/document/show/gci_program/google/gci2012…
, an outreach program to help us get more 13-to-17-year-old
contributors. I outlined the reasons here:
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2011-October/055937.html
This year, we are again eligible to apply to participate. I estimate
that we'd need about 2 organizational administrators and 21 mentors to
do it well. So I've opened signups at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Code-In and explained what those
people would be committing to. If you want us to apply to participate
in GCI this winter, please comment on that page by November 1st. Thanks.

I've just noticed
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2012_Wikisource_roadmap
and would like to comment the passage
Bień, Janusz S. (2011) Efficient search in hidden text of large
DjVu documents. In: Advanced Language Technologies for Digital
Libraries. Lecture Notes in Computer Science (Theoretical Computer
Science and General Issues) (6699). Springer, pp. 1-14. ISBN
978-3-642-23159-9
Januz also suggested this graphical editor for Djvu. He said they
are working on a proof of prototype tool for a similar purpose.
The paper mentioned above is available freely as a self-archived copy,
just click on the title and choose the last file or go directly to our
digital library at http://bc.klf.uw.edu.pl/177/. Some other
presentations related to the tools are also available in this library,
you can find examples and screenshots useful even if the text is in
Polish.
More recent and complete information is available now at the project
site
https://bitbucket.org/jsbien/ndt/wiki/wyniki
It includes in particular the source code and the links to virtual
machines with the software installed.
The experimental proofing and transcribing tools are also available
there. Unfortunately the grant came to the end and the further
development can be done only by volunteers.
I would like also to draw your attention to the slides and the recording
http://bc.klf.uw.edu.pl/298/https://sas.elluminate.com/drtbl?sid=2008350&suid=D.EACBAF1295BF570E4ADA400…
which describe in English several programs made available by the
project.
Best regards
Janusz

Hey,
I've been looking for an alternative to Gerrit's code review interface and came across Mylyn, a plug-in for Eclipse with a connector for Gerrit. I'm happy to report that it does work well with our Gerrit setup. Now you can choose between two UX disasters :)
I'm not a fan of Eclipse, but it is fairly customizable, so if you have accessibility needs or would simply prefer to have a different layout for diffs, there's a chance you'll be able to beat out a better user experience out of Eclipse. Using Eclipse also makes it possible to do code reviews off-line and sync them later.
Screenshot: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/File:Gerrit-review-in-Eclipse.png
I started to document the configuration process over at [[mw:Git/Workflow]]:

I hope this is useful.

Hello,
I am a French student and I am currently realizing my final thesis in the
field of Free/libre open source software.
It would be a great help for me if you could answer a short online survey
(it should take approximately 5 minutes).
This survey is designed to reach a better understanding of the cooperation
and coordination between developers in Free/libre open source projects.
There is no right or wrong answers, therefore, feel free to answer
spontaneously and to skip the questions you feel you do not want to answer.
The link to the survey is: http://bit.ly/QUuUoz
I would like to remind you that the participation is absolutely anonymous
and voluntary, and you can quit it at any time. Your answers will be
strictly confidential and will be used only for research purpose (no
commercial use of any information you provided).
If you find this survey interesting, you are welcome to share it with other
developers!
If you want to add something, or if you need further information about this
survey, feel free to contact me at: d <tanguy.duret(a)gmx.fr>

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and your enthusiasm! :)
