On en.wikipedia we have a discussion about giving a user account sysop
group membership at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/ProtectionBot
We are currently discussing giving this user account only the
permissions from the group "registered" (or "bots") *plus* the protect
permission alone (instead of the whole sysop group set of permissions).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_adminship/Protecti…
Do we need a new user group for this on en.wikipedia? Maybe a new group
"protect", containing the protect permission alone?
If we can show consensus for this, would a site admin/developer do this
for us?

(sigh)
That's all well and good, but for things like NewestPages, which are
supposed to be backwards-compatible...not ideal, since the
descriptions look ridiculous in older Special:Version pages.

Rick Block and I spent some time discussing the syntax for intersections
(see Wikipedia:Category intersection or the shortcut
WP:CI). Since there can be more than two categories involved, and
you'd still want to pipe how it was displayed, we came up with:
Living American actors
I'm not certain that category unions are nearly as critical. Since all
these "index" categories (Americans, Actors, Poets, Writers, etc...) would
be fully populated, they would already contain the union of all their
sub-categories. The only thing missing would be unions of only some of the
subcategories, for instance, the union of Comedy films and Drama films, or
Poets and Novelists. For most topics these do not seem very significant.
There are several ways intersections could be implemented. We've sketched
out 3 alternative approaches at WP:CI.

some questions:
1. I see quite a lot fo mediawiki's tables use auto-increment as
primary key but we know that this is no good for innodb, do you guy
aware of this problem?
2. Why the datasebase dump (/download.wikimedia.org) do not use a
unqiue format? eg. some files are XML and some files are SQL
3. Why not output as CSV format so we can use mysqlimport, which is a
LOT faster for all of us.
thanks.
Hi all,
is there any way to export multiple images from a wikipedia, please (in this case Catalan wikipedia)? Seemingly the special:export page does not match this goal.
Many thamks.
Cheers,
Claudi

Subject: [Commons-l] We'd like a better template message transclusion.
To: Commons-l(a)wikimedia.org
Please throw your suggestions on how the current
template translation could be better. Take
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:GFDL . One
click should show the GFDL message in the desired
language, without bringing out a whole new page.
Ideally, the template message should change to show
whatever language the image in included into;
for Spanish Wikipedia, etc. Is it
possible? Or does it require complicated changes to
MediaWiki?
Are there other ways to improve this template
situation?
/ Fredrik

I just tried sending an email to both wikien-l and wikimediauk-l (both
addresses in the From: line). I then got a message back saying the
message was in the moderation queue because "Message has implicit
destination". I'm a moderator on wikien-l, so I looked at the message
and it had no subject and no body. Huh?
Sending a message to wikien-l on its own worked fine ...

Sorry if I am not describing this well. But on the the
wiki's if there is an html link to a post in the
mailing list archive it is now broken. For example
all the links on this page:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/LSS/foundation-l-archives/2007_01_1-7
But these links are all over all the wiki's as part of
different disscussions, policies, etc.
