How do I recognize bots?

Shaihulud wrote "Wikimedia looks in user table. in user_rights there's a flag 'bots'" Well, I have no access to the user table from the stats scripts, just the dumps. If someone has some time to spare, would it be possible to add a SQL task at the start of the stats job which extracts a list of bots from the user tables and dumps them in csv format? Is not a load-heavy query I presume. Per line one bot: language code, 'user' name. Thanks in advance. Erik Zachte

How do I recognize bots?

I was asked today to filter bots from the stats and present them in a separate list. I think that would be nice. I also would like to redefine 'edits per month' to 'edits per month excluding known bots'. Now the latest stats show a marked increase in edit activity in June, which in reality is mainly due to 'Template Namespace Initialisation Script'. So my question is: any suggestions how to recognize bots unambiguously? I checked http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bots but the bot list there seems rather incomplete. Checking on postfix 'bot' would be unreliable, not all are named in this way, especially in other languages. I might even offend user 'Joe Bot'. Where does WikiMedia look for filtering Recent Changes? Erik Zachte

small template & furigana

Tim Starling spoke about other method to limit risk of DOS attack (based on template size), but waiting to those implementations can you deactivate the limit (or set it to 100) for tiny template (ex: less than 1kb, 256 bytes, or 100 bytes). For example, on French WP, we use a lot of {{e}} to emulate <small><sup>e</sup></small> (it's same as the English "th" for centuries, etc.). Other thing, I tried to make a template to be able to write Japanese furigana (small letters over kanjis to give the pronunciation) into articles. I tried this {| style='display:inline;' |<font size='-4'>{{{2}}}<font> |- |{{{1}}} |} I'd like to use it to write something like "これは{{furi|日本|にほん}}です" where "にほん" is display in small character upper "日本". This work fine in HTML, but with Mediawiki parser the first ("これは") and the last block ("です") are into <p> tag that prevent table to be inlined. Separating the MediaWiki default interface text from the Wikimedia default

While I was installing MediaWiki for my research group over the last couple of weeks, I was struck by how inappropriate some of the interface text is for an "out of the box" MediaWiki installation. I hacked away at Language.php for a while attempting to fix this, but then I realised: Language.php isn't just the MediaWiki default, it's also the default for new Wikipedias. Well, it turns out I'd already written most of the code to fix this situation, some time ago. A copy can be made of the MediaWiki namespace of a wiki using dumpMessages.php. And InitialiseMessages.inc had some untested support for reading in such files. The idea was to use the interface text from the English Wikipedia as the default for new Wikimedia wikis. To do this, first I had to generalise the text in the MediaWiki namespace, using tags such as {{PROJECT}} and {{localurle:}}. This allows the resulting dumped language file to be used for other projects, where the namespace names or even directory structures might be different. This worked just fine, and I dumped the file and committed it to CVS. I also dumped the MediaWiki namespaces of a few other languages, but I'm not sure if they have been generalised in the same way as the English one. I then initialised the new kw.wikipedia.org with the text from the English Wikipedia. This also appears to have worked just fine. I haven't yet written code to allow MediaWiki to load one of these language files at run time, but I do plan to do so. When that's done, we could theoretically remove the $wgAllMessagesXx arrays from the LanguageXx.php files. -- Tim Starling

timeout in editing a template.

While trying to edit the Template:Stub page (and the Template:Esbozo page that has the same content) in the spanish wikipedia, I get an error with the following message: Sorry- we have a problem... Database error on save...

with message Database error From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A database query syntax error has occurred. This could be because of an illegal search query (see Searching Wikipedia), or it may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:: UPDATE cur SET cur_text = etc... from within function "Article::updateArticle". MySQL returned error "1205: Lock wait timeout exceeded; Try restarting transaction". -- Neil

DMA good, NFS bad

So we've got Zwinger speaking SATA and DMA, woopiee! Should be faster and stuff. On the maybe less good side, we had set some of the other machines to mount /home with nfsvers=3, which it no longer accepts. This might cause problems particularly with large files (eg for backup).
