Just because you're currently talking about the parser I thought I might
bring up an issue which should be fixed in a next generation parser:
* foo bar
foo
Becomes
<UL><LI>foo bar
</LI></UL>
foo
It should become
<UL><LI>foo bar foo
</LI></UL>
I generally agree that wiki markup should not span linebreaks, but here I
think it should at least span single linebreaks. Otherwise it gets very
hard to format bullets with long paragraphs:
* foaer aoierj aerjf ioaer oifmaeo rmfi aoerijf oaeir ioafjeoirjf oaierj
oaierjfoiaj eroi fjaeroijf aoerji oaeijrfo iajero fjaoerij oaierjfo iajeio
jraeoifj aoeirj oiaejrfo iajerio fjaoerjifo iajeroij afoeirjf aioejr
ioaerjfoairjefo iaejroifj ioaerjf ioaerjfoaierjfoi jaeroifjaoeirjfoaerjif
ioaerjfioaejrfo iajer fioaejrifj aeiorjfoaeirjf oiaejrfoiaejrfioaejrfoi ..
I can't insert a linebreak because that would kill the bullet. But a
single linebreak would already increase readability. This is important for
[[Current events]], where individual items are formatted as bullets and
can get fairly long.

Erik
I've been reading the new draft standard of XHTML 2.0, and in the midst
of wading through obscure tags that I was shocked to realize have been
part of HTML for a decade without ever being used but are still there, was
reminded of a couple things we could do:
Interlanguage links should produce <link> tags to go in the <head>
section, such as:
<link title="This article in Swahili"
rel="alternate"
lang="sw"
href="http://sw.wikipedia.org/..." />
And also:
<link title="Printable version"
rel="alternate"
media="print"
href="http://....?printable=yes" />
and perhaps:
<link title="Wikipedia copyright"
rel="copyright"
href="http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights" />
Will it have any practical results? I dunno. But it sounds exciting and
standards-compliant!

I noticed that PHP Accelerator on pliny was putting out error messages
that it was the wrong version for PHP 4.3.x, so I reinstalled the
appropriate version.

*Hi,
it seems that the MySQL server connections are reaching their maximum
again. This just happened to me when calling a page on the German Wikipedia:
Warning*: mysql_pconnect() [function.mysql-pconnect
<http://www.php.net/function.mysql-pconnect>]: Can't connect to MySQL
server on '127.0.0.1' (111) in
*/usr/local/apache/htdocs-de/w/DatabaseFunctions.php* on line *28*
Konnte keine Verbindung zur Datenbank auf 127.0.0.1 herstellen
*Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (111)*
If this error persists after reloading and clearing your browser cache,
please notify the Wikipedia developers <mailto:wikidown@bomis.com>.
Perhaps you should max up the limit again (but I don't know if that
really is the problem).

Random thought: would it be possible to have mailman insert into the
message footer the URL for that message in the archives?
I sometimes find I want to cite a message from one of the lists on the
wiki or elsewhere and while it's trivial to look it up in my mail
archives, I need to go to the web archives and find the message all over
again in order to point other people at the same message short of just
pasting the entire text in again.

Okay, I think I've got NTP set up for time synchronization.
I think.
I installed it from source on pliny (the workhorse), pointed it at a local
tier 2 server, and it _seems_ to be happy:
# ntptrace
localhost.localdomain: stratum 3, offset 0.000024, synch distance 0.03992
zorac.sf-bay.org: stratum 2, offset 0.053651, synch distance 0.02638
timekeeper.isi.edu: stratum 1, offset 0.054295, synch distance 0.00000, refid 'GPS'
(Note that I did a manual approximate-synch to current time on this
machine before installing NTP.)
I'm more confused on the new machine, larousse. NTP was already installed
as an RPM; I wiped out the config file to point it at the same server, but
I'm not sure it's working:
# /usr/sbin/ntptrace
localhost.localdomain: stratum 16, offset 0.000120, synch distance 0.00272
0.0.0.0: *Not Synchronized*
It may just need to sit for a while and work its magic.

MySQL AB just released a notice that there's a security bug in
version 3.23.54, which we are using. So now would be a good time
to upgrade to 4.0.12. It's been running at Piclab (where it was
installed in-place over an existing installation) and larousse
(where it was installed initially), and seems to be running well.
This will require a reboot, which I'll plan on doing late tonight
if there are no objections.
It would be great if I could get the DNS changes done by then
too, at least for "pliny", "larousse", and "test".
