Thanks to the community for having taken up this challenge!
Many local copies of the template were deleted, but most of them are still there. The progress for wikis that are connected to Wikidata can be monitored via this item.

I also discovered that the parser function is only called if no arguments are present. For example, after two simple edits ([1] and [2]) on the German Wikiversity, the transclusion count dropped from 1608 to 45.
