Hello Wikisourcerers,
We are excited to inform you all that the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group is starting a GLAM project with the century-old Rammohun Library and Free Reading Room https://reasonator.toolforge.org/?q=Q68023417, Kolkata from tomorrow.
A Wikimedian-in-residence has been trained and assigned to digitize the public domain collections of the library, who will be responsible for selection, digitization and uploading of the contents on Wikimedia sites. The paid position will be taken care of by a general support fund from this year from a portion dedicated to Bangla Wikisource. The scanner, which is going to be used for the digitization, has been kindly provided by CIS-A2K upon request.
The GLAM project can be found here - https://bn.wikisource.org/s/i1po

This is very good news.
Please can you tell us more about the works to be uploaded? What languages are they in? Do they include illustrations, which will be of use to Wikimedia projects in other languages? Are they factual, or fiction? On what subjects?
Will there be a facility to request digitisation of particular works?
Will anyone from the project be at the Wikisource conference in February?
Hi Andy,
Thanks for your interest.
Most of the works are in Bangla and English languages. For now, we are focusing on Bangla language works to use them on Bangla Wikisource but at some point time of the project, we will be digitizing English books too. Because of resource constraints and to avoid duplication of efforts, we are selecting only those editions whose scan copies are not freely available on the internet and this filtering is taking some of our time. The library is also prioritizing some of their books to be digitized because of their actual physical condition or rarity.
Regarding the contents of the works, they have wide variety of subjects, both fictions and non-fictions and some definitely have illustrations which, I am sure, can be used on other Wikimedia sites. The library also contains periodicals and a few manuscripts in their collection.
If you have information of any public domain books available in the library, which has not been digitized anywhere and you need them to be digitized by us, please ping us at the project talk page and we can of course forward that request to the library to give us access to those books for digitization.
Hopefully, at least one person from this project will be there at the February conference.
Regards, Bodhisattwa

What a great event you are starting! If in your research you stumble upon an Italian book drop a line in my Italian user talk page and I will gladly evaluate its transcription!
have a fruitful digital journey!

Hi Edoardo,
We will keep that in mind and let you know if we come across any Italian books. Apart from Bangla, we are prioritising very rare English books for now but, we would love to be of any assistance to our Italian friends who have been so kind to Bangla Wikisource whenever we asked for any help 7-8 years back.
Regards, Bodhisattwa
