The icon links to the version you are not currently viewing, and says
"see...". Something has to do that, otherwise readers won't no which is what
or where they are.

OK, so here is the next bug:
In the new UI (both versions) the icon does not correspond to the
current version, but to some other. For example, when looking at the
old version

which is not flagged at all, I see the yellow icon, because the
current version is sighted. Thus, the icon does not show information
about the version I see, but about a version I do not see.
IMHO, it should be the other way around: the icon should tell me the
status of the version I see (in this case the grey icon) and when
klicking on it, I should get the relevant links to other existing
versions.
