- Users have more options. The can use the list like the do now and/or use it like a newsgroup. People who are used to usenet will find the usenet way better. - If you use the list (and the other lists of wikipedia) you do not have to recieve the emails. (but if you like to recieve those, you can) - You can also read the newsgroup archive online whit a nice look; example; http://news.gmane.org/thread.php?group=gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.i... - The list admin haves compleet control. All postings are send to the list posting email adress. - Gmane.org will encrypt all emailadresses; this means; My email adress is ; giskart@wikipedia.be Gmane change it to something like: giskart=hi6Y0CQ0nG0@public.gmane.org
That strange adress is a working adress. If you send a message to it you will recieve the first time a autoresponds to confirm that you exist and are not a spammer. Only after confirmation it will be send to the destination. The newsgroup can also be created whitout this anti-spam protection, be it think it is a very good option.

Not really. If want the contens of your messages secret, this is not good because this is public. But something secret you best do not post to a mailing list. And the list is already public.
