The deadline for submissions of new Wikipedia logos is August 20. For those who think this is too short, I have started a vote on whether the deadline should be extended or not.

All Wikipedians interested in the contest should participate, otherwise the vote will be biased in favor of extending the deadline (and again .. and again ..).

The reality is that the contest should continue until candidates of evident quality exist.
One requirement I'd like to add here -- the winning entrant must be willing to sign over all ownership to the Wikimedia Foundation. There could be a lot of confusion about copyright versus trademark rights and I wouldn't want anyone to end up unhappy.

Absolutely necessary, would not want the creator to use the logo on some other project (which according to the general approach here would be acceptable), though once it is used by Wikipedia then trademark rights begin to attach. Federal trademark registration should be sought ASAP once the winner is picked (perhaps even before any public announcements) and the TM (or SM) sign be attached pending registration (you can use the R in a circle ONLY after registration is completed). I don't think that using TM and R signs is a good idea. They're ugly and look kinda, well, lawyerish.
You can also state that it is the mark of Wikipedia. Use of the R prevents misuse. It is no more lawyerly than the copyright notice or copyright symbol. Is it? Alex756 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tomasz Wegrzanowski" taw@users.sourceforge.net
