indeed, as far as I know it means glaciar, it is used in the same way
as mount is in e.g. Mount St Helens, as well as just meaning
glacier. I've never heard it used in a persons name tho.

It means a glacier. It has, btw, been borrowed to Danish in the form
'jøkel', which is a bit narrower in scope - we would say 'jøkel' about
a glacier in the Nordic countries, while we would say 'gletsjer' about
glaciers anywhere.
