I remember there being talk some time ago about
creating an Image namespace which I think would solve
this problem nicely... this could also eliminate
having to type
http://www.wikipedia.com/upload/blah_blah_blah.png,
which is not very user friendly. But make sure doing
this doesn't break the non-English wikipedias!

Is my sense of the general opinion correct, that we should keep the
current "overwriting-uploaded-files-is-ok" policy unless and until we
implement a more sophisticated image history system?
Axel
Somebody who can alter the breaking news and current events list needs
to add East Timor to it. I think the creation of a 'new country' (even
though it's not actually new) is kind of important... Somebody who knows
about politics could write a better article for the subject too.

Love and huggles to all!
I seem to recall that the page deletion facility used to have a place to
say why
you were deleting a page. Now it just asks "are you sure?" and, if so, does the
deed and logs what was deleted and by whom.
Is there any place to record reasons for page deletions?

How would that work though? Suppose we both use the same image of a
German flag on different articles. Now I decide that I like my flag
bigger, and upload the new one. Which one will be displayed on your
page? And, which one will be displayed on yesterday's version of my
article?

> But that's annoying if you want to update a file with a corrected version.
True, but that's a rare event, and furthermore an event that should
not happen silently but should be recorded in the article's history.
In addition, what if some other author on some other page uses your
image, and does not want your correction? In the current scheme, they
have absolutely no say in the matter.
Axel
Right now, any registered user can upload a file with the same name as
an already existing one, thereby either unintentionally or
deliberately overwriting and removing the original file. This will be
recorded on the upload logs page, but not in the history of the page
which contains the image. As a result, anybody who uploads images
needs to keep local safety copies and needs to check from time to time
to make sure that the file on the server is still the intended one.
I propose that we completely forbid the overwriting of existing
uploaded files. If you have a new version of your image, give it a
different name and change the link in the article. That way, the
change will be recorded in the article's history, and the previous
version of the image will still be accessible.
Sysops would of course still be able to remove any file.

That would be cool. It should direct to a server where you could
download either the raw SQL data for people who want to do fancy
things, or a ready-to-browse static HTML tree (with edit, special and
history links pointing to wikipedia.com).
Jimbo, could you start your cron script again to make regular database
dumps? We could then easily write a script which produces such a static
HTML tree.
mysqldump --user="XXX" --password="XXX" --opt wiki cur old linked unlinked | gzip -9 > wikipedia_dump_`date +%Y%m%d`.sql.gz
(if the mysql database is called wiki)

It might really make people think if they can click
Download Wikipedia! :o) What would you think of
adding this to the sidebar? Perhaps we could move
this file to another server so it wouldn't diminish
Wikipedia performance... maybe download.com? :o)
Also, please, please, PLEASE fix that horrible date
link on the sidebar. It's HORRIBLE! I'll repeat:
it's *horrible*! Either change it so it links
individually to the date and year, or link it to
Current_Events or just delete it... but do
something!!!
Thanks,
Chuck
