The decision to close Wikinews was announced at https://meta.wikimedia.org/?diff=30328680
(A reply mentions interest from WMNYC in helping.)
- Think of governance early and do not reinvent the wheel. Especially
if there's an intention to reuse Wikimedia trademarks, it's probably best to reuse an existing entity with experience in sort of things. The entity hosting the project assets does not need to be the same as the entity providing internet hosting. An obvious choice would be Software for the Public Interest https://www.spi-inc.org/ given we have history with them and they already host translatewiki.net.
Great reminder and suggestion. If not as host than as official advisor to WikiNYC.
Another random question came to my mind at mid night part of this brainstorming is why need mediawiki at all. Nowadays that could be github static pages with source in markdown fornat and pull requests to be approved by a reviewer. If only Wikimedia Commons images could be included somehow and also translations...
