I am writing to inform you that the Board of Trustees may make their final decision around the week of March 30 and release the results via Meta and Diff.
I would like to ask whether there is any interest among Wikinews contributors in migrating to a self-hosted server or to another wiki farm such as Miraheze. To be clear, self-hosting would involve ongoing costs, and I am not sure how sustainable that would be in the long term.
I am raising this now because it is unclear how much time the Board of Trustees might allow for migration after making their final decision, especially if all Wikinews editions are locked permanently. Given this uncertainty, some level of pre-planning may be worth considering.

The decision to close Wikinews was announced at https://meta.wikimedia.org/?diff=30328680
(A reply mentions interest from WMNYC in helping.)
There is a page https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Migration_of_Wikinews_and_future_hosts
Two quick suggestions about a potential migration.
1) Look for help from others with experience migrating large wikis. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Grabbers were developed to migrate Wikia wikis to independent hosts.
2) Think of governance early and do not reinvent the wheel. Especially if there's an intention to reuse Wikimedia trademarks, it's probably best to reuse an existing entity with experience in sort of things. The entity hosting the project assets does not need to be the same as the entity providing internet hosting. An obvious choice would be Software for the Public Interest https://www.spi-inc.org/ given we have history with them and they already host translatewiki.net.
