This was on wikiversity-l. I (think i) remember someone on wikinews saying they wanted pdfs everywhere a while back, so I thought I'd forward this in case it was of interest to whoever said that. (if no one said that, sorry for the random forward).

Hi -
for the last few days, we've been testing the new wiki-to-print functionality on WikiEducator.org. If you haven't already, give it a spin: if all goes well, this functionality will soon find its way into Wikimedia projects.

I've had a quick look at this. How difficult would it be to adapt this to do the Print Edition? Could we use this to also include images on Print Ed?
Would we need to automate the building of a collection to do this?

To the extent that the desired layout can be reproduced in wiki syntax, it should be reasonably easy. But if you want to get a precise per-page layout, you'll be better off with a word processor or DTP app.
The next stage of the project will add OpenDocument support -- that should definitely help.
