Coimbatore, March 7

One might wonder what connection the World Classical Tamil Conference has with the Connect Coimbatore 2010 event.

The State IT Secretary Mr P.W.C. Davidar, in his inaugural address, while hailing the fast-paced development taking place here for the Conference, said the State plans to launch a Tamil Wikipedia Contest next week.

The objective for the contest is to get more articles in Tamil Wikipedia.

“We discovered that in the Tamil Wikipedia there are only about 22,000 articles in Tamil as compared to lakhs together in Spanish, French, English. So we put our mind together to work this out and decided to have a good Wikipedia competition.”

The launch would take place next week.

“College students irrespective of the background, be it engineering, law, sports, will be invited to participate in the competition. We are hoping that this entire effort will help us upload around 30,000-40,000 articles of Wiki standard on the Net. We will be able to use this to promote our State, our language,” he added.
