2002ൽ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിൽ  മലയാളം യൂണിക്കോഡ് പിച്ച വെച്ച് നടക്കുന്ന കാലമാണ് (അതിനു മുൻപേ സംഗതി ഉണ്ടെന്ന് ചിലരൊക്കെ തട്ടി മൂളിക്കുമെങ്കിലും വിക്കിപീഡിയയിലെ ഒക്കെ എഴുതാൻ വന്ന ആദ്യകാല സാധാരണ പ്രവർത്തകർക്ക് ഫോണ്ടും ബ്രൗസറും മറ്റും വലിയ പ്രശ്നം തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു.) ആ സമയത്ത് 2002 ജൂണിലോ മറ്റോ ആണ് അജയ് ലാലിന്റെ തൂലിക ഇറങ്ങുന്നത്. സാധാരണക്കാരന് പ്രാപ്യമായ (സൗജന്യമായി ഡൗൺലോഡ് ചെയ്യാവുന്ന) ഫോണ്ട് എന്ന നിലയിൽ അജയ് ലാലിന്റെ തൂലിക ഫോണ്ട് മലയാളം വിക്കിപീഡിയയുടെ തുടക്ക കാലത്തെങ്കിലും ഒരു പ്രത്യേക റോൾ വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഇക്കാര്യം വിനോദ് പ്രഭാകരൻ പത്താം വാർഷികത്തോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ച് നൽകിയ ഇമെയിൽ ഇന്റർവ്യൂവിൽ (http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikiml-l/2012-December/004513.html) പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിൽ പറയുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെ

As I said there were very few who were around me who spoke Malayalam. I benefited enormously from Cibu C Johny's Varamozhi transliteration software. Without it it would have been an extremely onerous task and I doubt I would have gone ahead with it. Another thing which helped a lot were the very good Thoolika Unicode fonts developed and made freely available by Supersoft in Thiruvanathapuram (I believe the name of the person running this place is Ajayalal). The alternative to these fonts was a very basic and poor font from Microsoft. But at the time Microsoft was working towards improving their support for Indian scripts and they had made some patches available to the software which I used. Unfortunately the support for Malayalam in Linux was poor. So even though for all other purposes I was a Linux user I had to turn to Microsoft Windows to edit the Wikipedia. Ultimately it was the expansion of broadband access coupled with support of Malayalam Unicode support in Microsoft Windows which led to the growth of blogging and this in turn fed into the growth of Malayalam Wikipedia. All these were still several years ahead when I was editing my first page on Wikipedia.

അപ്പോ ഇതേ ഉള്ളൂ കാര്യം. മറ്റ് മലയാളം ഫോണ്ടുകളും മറ്റും ഉണ്ടായാലും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും ഇന്നുള്ളത് പോലെ ഫോണ്ടുകളും മറ്റും ഇല്ലാതിരുന്ന സമയത്ത് വിനോദ് പ്രഭാകരന് തൂലിക ഫോണ്ട്  സഹായമായിട്ടുണ്ട്. അക്കാര്യം മലയാളം വിക്കിപീഡിയയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് നല്ലതാണ്. പ്രത്യെകിച്ച് വിനോദ് തന്നെ ഇത് എൻഡോർസ് ചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥിതിക്ക്.

ചുരുക്കി പറഞ്ഞാൽ ഒരു സാധാരണക്കാരന് 2002 ജൂണിനു മുൻപ് മലയാളം വിക്കിപീഡിയ എഡിറ്റ് ചെയ്ത് തുടങ്ങാൻ പറ്റിയ സാഹചര്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല
