Kindly read this as well. In a nutshell, Stewards are a community elected group of people with complete access to all tools and rights to all foundation projects, including special purpose projects. They are tasked with implementing community consensus and helping projects in need. Stewards are the ones you can go up and ask for any help that cannot be resolved in a local wiki as well. While we say that, they are not a dispute resolution body (one is in discussions, but people prefer to keep it separate from Stewards for want of clarity). They also function as the brick wall people or projects hit when they decide to go bad or start a revolt. Stewards will ensure that the fundamental foundation policies will be upheld in such cases.   

On the flip side, Stewards are the prime target of vandals and many projects will see them as villains who does not allow what they want to do with the project. A classic example is what happened in Ace.wikipedia last year. All ops decided unilaterally that they want to promote their non-neutral point of view and use the project to promote them and call for action. This was brought to the notice of Stewards and after a few hours of reasoning, revert war and loathing, all the sysops were de-oped and order was restored by force.
