Does the publisher have to seek her permission before publishing this work?

Perhaps, we often miss to think of a very important point there, while talking about copy-left: that  publishers themselves (at least most of them,)  have got some self-esteem to uphold.

We might encounter a few back street printers who would print cheap 'pirated' paperbacks of western and other works. But will a publisher of some repute and brand equity dare to just 'grab' a free work and run the press over it?

I suppose 'No'.

Even when a work is copyleft, it will be deemed just right, fair and proper to explicitly ask the author (and most probably, also compensate somewhat monetarily) before any such act. At least, they wouldn't want to show up as another bunch of easy copy cats.

Again, once a particular publisher has taken over a work to print, other publishers wouldn't want to take up the same material and just re-label and sell it. After all, they too would prefer some originality and unique mercantile.

As I understand, Devika just meant that KSSP is taking a goodwill permission (call it a 'blessing') from her even if it was not mandatory.

hi,

I just read the English translation of the Malayalam original here - http://lists.smc.org.in/pipermail/discuss-smc.org.in/2013-October/016907.html - after reading the original in Malayalam to confirm my doubt and was considering the wording a bit.

The author, J Devika has released her work under a copyleft license and yet talks of considering granting a publisher (Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad) the right to publish her work. Does not the copyleft license grant any publisher the freedom to publish her work as long as the publisher licenses it under a similar copyleft license and attributes the work as being hers? Does the publisher have to seek her permission before publishing this work?

warm regards,
Pradeep

Attaching an English translation of the note. I wish to thank Prof.
C.P.N. Bhattathiri for polishing up my translation and making it as good
as it is now.
