Hello everyone,
Wikimedia South Africa has just entered into an agreement with the South
African Centre for Digital Language Resources
<https://sadilar.org/index.php/en/> (SADiLaR) to run a series of workshops
training participants how to start editing Wikipedia with a focus on
translating Wikipedia articles into other South African language versions
of Wikipedia. It is Wikimedia South Africa's flagship project to help
support the growth of African language Wikipedias.
Normally we would all run these edit-a-thons entirely as unpaid volunteers
as we have always done in the past. However this project is so large and
ambitious (SADiLaR wants to do workshops at all of South Africa's
universities across the country each one lasting up to 3 days) that we
have budgeted an amount to reimburse trainers. This is a much larger
commitment than any other workshop training event we have ever done before
in the past. As such the board decided it was only fair and most practical
to reimburse trainers for running the workshops and coaching
the participants.
This email is to ask our community, such as yourself, if anyone with
extensive Wikipedia editing experience (more than 500 edits and at least a
year of editing experience) is interested in becoming a trainer to run a
few workshops?
Trainers will need a strong understanding of both Wikipedia's culture and
rules in addition to the practicalities of how to make edits. Trainers will
also need to attend an online training session to learn the lesson plan,
how to teach editing, coach participants and get informed on the focus of
the workshops.
We have a limited budget to cover travel, accomodation, and an hourly rate
for each trainer. Each workshop only needs one or two trainers and we
don't have much more in the budget to cover more people than that sadly. So
there are a limited number of places. We will prioritise trainers who are
located close to the workshop venue and who have prior Wikipedia training
experience.
SADiLaR is still in the process of setting up all of the university venues
and selecting the participants so we currently do not yet have a list of
dates, places and workshop participant numbers. The project will last until
the end of 2024 and might continue into 2025.
Please contact myself or Shupai Mchuchu <shupai.mchuchu(a)wikimedia.org.za>
for more details.
In the meantime, for those that are interested, you can view the workshop
outline on meta here <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WM_ZA/SADiLaR_2023>,

Dear all,
We ran a Wiki Loves Africa in South Africa 2023 photograph competition
"Wiki Loves Africa'' is an annual contest where anyone across Africa can
contribute media that relates to that year's theme to Wikimedia Commons
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Wikimedia_Commons> for use on Wikipedia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Wikipedia>and other project websites of
the Wikimedia Foundation. Wiki Loves Africa encourages participants to
contribute media (photographs, video, and audio) that illustrate the
specific theme for that year. Each year the theme changes. Each year's
theme is chosen by the community to be a universal, visually-rich, and
culturally-specific topic (for example, markets, rites of passage,
festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urbanity, daily life,
notable persons, etc). Participants were encouraged to submit photos
of' Climate
and Weather
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2023_in_South_…>
in South Africa between 1st of March and 30th April 2023. By submitting
photos to the competition, participants shared pictures of climate and
weather in South Africa with the rest of the world to enjoy through the
internet.
This competition is great for aspiring photographers, photography
students, or anyone who is interested in photography, but it is still open
to anyone who wants to partake in the competition.
We are happy to announce our Wiki Loves Africa in South Africa 2023

Hello everyone,
This is just a reminder and quick update about the upcoming Wiki meetup
<Wikipedia:Meetup/South Africa/South Africa 30> happening this Saturday, 29
July 2023, from 10:00 to 12:00 SAST. The event will happen both online via
our Discord channel <https://discord.gg/HwBwHWWurr>and in person at Truth
Coffee, 36 Buitenkant Street in Cape Town.
For those of us attending in person in Cape Town I have the following
updates. Some of you have heard that a bus hit
<https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/caffeine-crash-myciti-bus-sm…>the
front entrance of Truth Coffee where we will be hosting Saturday's event in
Cape Town. I have confirmed with the venue that the crash has *not
significantly damaged the site* and as such we will still be hosting the
event at Truth Coffee. The damage was superficial. The venue has not
changed.
Also, we have had a second bunch of t-shirts printed up for paid up chapter
members, I have attached a picture of a cheap model (myself) wearing one of
the t-shirts which we will be giving out to chapter members at the meetup.
So if you are a paid up chapter member then join us in person in Cape Town
and get a t-shirt. The other half of the t-shirts that have been made are
being sent to the chapter offices in Gauteng for use there.
