But I imagine it wouldn't be too hard for us to run cables to other rooms or just use a powerful wireless transmitter somewhere central. (Or perhaps powerline wireless connecting multiple hubs?) Both Buenos Aries and Alexandria got their conference venue for free, so that was, and remains our target. If we can’t then we’re going to need fairly serious reductions on accommodation to be competitive. (And even then it’s going to be hard, Alexandria got accommodation for $6 per person per night.) Or of course a major UK only sponsorship deal. Gary Kirk had some success last year with Jim Knight (junior schools minister), so I’m going to pursue that avenue myself unless Gary wants to volunteer to pick up old contacts. I’ll also pester my google UK contact to see if he can give me a slightly better way in than he did last year. (Does anyone have any Amazon UK/Microsoft UK/Ebay UK/etc contacts?) Jonathan Zittrain is leaving the OII which marginally reduces our chance of getting anything serious from Balliol/them on the accommodation front but we’ll see, he has promised to get some of his DPhil students onboard which should give us a voice on the inside hopefully. If vanilla internet access is likely to be an issue why not look at getting some of those wireless 3G modem sticks instead? Oxford has fairly extensive 3G coverage and so might be able to suport it. I think that it would be worth getting in contact with as many people as possible at this early stage and seeing what options we have. We all need to be making contacts as well. In regards to a comparison with costing, i decided to get in contact with cardiff university, so that we could get some sort of idea as to how much it would cost elsewhere. To hire out one main 460 capacity conferance theater and say another 5 or 6 rooms with capacity from 100-150, with wireless in all theaters plus an exibition area (148m2) would cost just short of £5000. I contacted oxford university and they recommended the Examination School as that is really the only place capable for hosting 500 people in one room. Link here. I did try to ring them but there was no answer so i will try them again tomorrow. But we would be looking at somewhere in the region of probably 6000-7000 at a rough guess. There is also pricing there for internet/phone access plus other stuff. So being hosted by the university would be a possiblity and it would be cheaper than the town hall. The Main Halls in Exam Schools seat 450, not 500. Rather annoying I know. Possibly we could just have a real time video feed to another room, but I’m not sure if that would fly with the judges. The only 500+ venues in central Oxford I’ve discovered are the Town Hall, the Sheldonian and the Playhouse. We need a lecture theatre that holds 500, so those main halls wouldn't be big enough. Given previous years experience, UCL seems the best bet for a hypothetical London bid. But unless someone's prepared to take the lead on it it's not going to happen. There are several non-location specific tasks that need doing, such as contacting large tech-savvy companies to try and get sponsorship, so there's a job for someone if they want it. As long as there's no e.g. file-sharing we won't run afoul of the JANET or OUCS rules. The only potential stumbling block is college network administrators and their internal firewalls, but there's amount of discrepancy between colleges and as you say, there's always the option of tunnelling out over e.g. ssh.
