Hi all,
Just to keep you up to date regarding Gift Aid. I spoke to the HMRC Charities Unit today and asked them when we should expect a response. They said they are currently taking between 6-8 weeks so we should expect to hear around mid January.
As we are not registered with the Charity Commission their initial response may ask for more information to support out status as a charity; however, I'll keep everyone informed when we hear.
Regards,
Andrew Turvey Company Secretary Wiki UK Limited

I don't see how it taking quite a lot longer than we were hoping is a win...

No, indeed. Although it's good to have a clear indication of what kind of timescales people are working to - personally I'll keep off opening the metaphorical champagne until January!

Of course, it's no surprise that we hit a roadblock eventually - in fact, I'm surprised everything has gone so smoothly until now. Hopefully it will be done by the AGM, although that's a little optimistic. There is no urgency - we can claim gift aid retrospectively going back a couple of years, I think (there's no way it should take that long). It just makes it easier to encourage people to donate, but major fundraising isn't something we need to worry about until after the AGM. I think, with or without this, we can open metaphorical champagne at the AGM - getting that far is a great achievement. (Of course, opening real champagne is even better if anyone cares to buy some!)

Hmm, that depends when you expect the AGM to be. We cant hold the AGM until at least 21 days after the bank account is opened and they haven't even asked us for proof of ID yet. With holidays, that could easily drag on into the new year. We'll do it as quickly as possible of course, but I personally wouldn't be surprised if the AGM was around mid February.

I was hoping late January. If nothing goes wrong with the bank account, it's perfectly believable that it could be open by the end of the year, making late January an option for the AGM.

As I said when this issue came up in one of the board meeting, we can't just call the AGM the day after we get a bank account. There need to be time for people to join after the bank account, and before the notice, so that they can be a member and decide/time to run for the board, which need members to be nominated in writing.

That's true - I believe some people are waiting until the account is open before submitting their applications so they don't have cheques floating around for weeks (whereas I just haven't got around to filling out the form yet!). There would need to be time for them to apply. I guess that means an early February AGM at the earliest unless the bank gets back to you in the next week or so.
