Hello everyone,
I hope you are well. This month's mini wiki focuses on languages and adding structured data to the thousands of images submitted for this year's Wiki Loves Monuments Competition.
Shwmae Sumae Day https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shwmae_Sumae_Day on 15th October is a day marked each year in Wales to celebrate and promote the Welsh language. UNESCO declared 2022-2032 the International Decade of Indigenous Languages https://www.unesco.org/en/decades/indigenous-languages, and one of Wikimedia UK’s strategic aims is to support the development of indigenous and other underrepresented languages on Wikimedia projects to ensure indigenous languages continue to exist and thrive online.
There are just a handful of recorded examples of Welsh on Lingua Libre. So why not record bite size audio recordings on Lingua Libre https://lingualibre.org/wiki/LinguaLibre:Main_Page to help build an openly-licensed resource in Welsh - or any other indigenous and underrepresented language?
It’s simple to start using. It will present you with a word to read aloud, before moving on to the next. The recordings are automatically uploaded onto Wikimedia Commons, and can then be used on Wiktionary, or to illustrate proper nouns on Wikipedia articles. They can also be used as pronunciation guides for language students. You just need your Wikimedia Commons login to get started.
Adding Structured Data to Wiki Loves Monuments Images
Nearly 10,000 images were shared by participants in this year’s Wiki Loves Monuments competition in the UK! All of these images are shared on an open license and can be used to illustrate content on Wikipedia and make articles more instructive and engaging for the reader.
Adding structured data to these images helps to improve data quality, usability and increases the possibility of discovering these images. You can add structured data to the images shared using this new tool https://isa.toolforge.org/campaigns/416.
We’d love to hear from you on your experience of using Mini Wiki. If you have an idea for a task that you would like the UK community’s help with that is quick and simple, then email rupal.karia@wikimedia.org.uk.
Best wishes,
Hi Rupal and thanks for the info.
You mention Welsh. In Wales we have mainly focused on Mozilla Common Voice rather than LinguaLibre, a dataset of voice recordings in many languages, crowd‑sourced, open and free: excellent for speech-to-text, voice recognition, LLM's etc. Could be mass-uploaded onto Commons.
LinguaLibre is more of a library of individual words: a linguistic media library if you like, focused on Wiki projects such as Wiktionary. Jason has done some work on this.
Also thousands of placenames audio files were uploaded by WikiMon and by NLW straight to Commons and used on Wikipedia; in theory, they could also be added to LinguaLibre, but that would be chasing after your own tail.

Hi Robin,
I really appreciate the heads up on this, it's good to know that the community is using another useful platform. I didn't know about it, so I will look into it. I wouldn't want to increase / add extra work or move the community away from a project that is already working. I will let Gemma (Wales Coordinator) know as well so she can be kept in the loop.
Best wishes,
