Eight years of women in red, based talks?

280 online editathons. 70 training sessions in the UK. A budget of zero. Not a WMF affiliate. Sessions at BBC, UN, Several unis, 24 hour, different countries... Sister Projects in more than 30 languages. Every woman (ish) who was in the ODNB when WiR started and was a WiR now has an article. Was 15% now approaching 20%. Will we ever achieve 50? We did last year. Does this need five mins? ... I think most already know this.

Maybe more interesting to talk about just the Eight years of doing every ODNB women in red ... which women were most intriguing? History of the UK in 100 women?

I was most stunned that it was first found this year that there is a way of looking at Wikipedia that indicates that 50% women is emerging on the English Wikipedia?

I will be at the monthly Women in Red editathon at 1 pm today. Maybe we could discuss it then.... not heard of the monthly WiR editathons???

On Sunday 26th November this year we’ll be holding an online Wikimedia UK 2023 Community Meeting. We’ll be presenting the Wikimedian of the Year awards, celebrating the work of the community, and showcasing ways in which volunteers can get involved through an opportunities fair.

For the lightning talks section, we’d like to showcase activity that community members have been doing over the last while, and we'd really like to hear about work which we, or other community members might not have heard about. It’s often the case that there’s a huge amount of work done by Wikimedians that others just don’t see. So this is an invitation to tell us about what you’ve been editing, in a short lightning talk - strictly 5 minutes or less.

Have you done interesting things with a dataset on Wikidata? Maybe you’ve finally managed to track down a source to fix that article you’ve had your eye on for the last two months? Did your work on a Wikipedia article lead you to discover a really interesting story? Did you manage to get an openly licensed image that’s transformed an article?

… and crucially, would you like to share your story? If you’d like to present a lighting talk - 5 minutes maximum - please email sara.thomas@wikimedia.org.uk off-list and we can chat.

If you’re uncomfortable with public speaking, please do still get in touch and we can talk about options! Maybe we can do a slideshow, or record an interview, or put a short video together. (Ideally we’d rather that it was community members who speak in this section of the day and not WMUK staff members.)
